Clinicians at Duke Health were spending excessive time on documentation tasks, contributing to burnout and diminishing the quality of patient-clinician interactions. More than 50% of physicians nationally reported high job stress, with over 12% citing administrative burden as a primary cause. Duke sought a scalable solution to restore focus to direct patient care.
Duke Health implemented Abridge's real-time ambient AI platform, which listens to patient-clinician conversations and automatically generates clinical notes for review and integration into the EHR. The platform was rolled out to 5,000 clinicians across more than 150 primary and specialty clinics under Duke Health Integrated Practice and Duke Primary Care. Duke is also co-developing additional ambient AI clinical applications with Abridge.
The deployment enables clinicians to integrate notes into patient records during visits without manual transcription, restoring time for direct patient engagement. Duke Health and Abridge established a strategic innovation partnership to co-develop further AI applications beyond documentation. Specific quantitative outcome metrics (e.g., time saved per visit) had not yet been reported at the time of the announcement.
