UnityPoint Health achieves $100M+ in savings through AI-enabled data analytics and care management

UnityPoint Health, an integrated health system serving more than 2.7 million individuals throughout Iowa and western Illinois, faced challenges in controlling costs, managing care effectively, reducing unnecessary utilization, and optimizing clinical workflows such as blood transfusion practices and inpatient admissions.

UnityPoint Health partnered with Health Catalyst to leverage its cloud-based data and analytics platform—powered by data from more than 100 million patient records—to drive data-informed decisions across clinical, financial, and operational domains. AI-enabled care management improvements were deployed to reduce unnecessary ED visits and inpatient admissions, and analytics were applied to length of stay reduction and blood utilization programs.

Over multiple years, UnityPoint Health confirmed more than $100 million in savings and revenue enhancements. This included $41M in cost savings over two years from reduced length of stay, a $32M reduction in healthcare spending in one year from AI-enabled care management, a 39% relative reduction in emergency department visits, a 54% relative reduction in inpatient admissions, and a $17.4M reduction in direct costs over six years from reducing unnecessary red blood cell transfusions.
